Does the site display a postal address & phone number?

Do they have a returns policy?


Check that the web address in the browser starts with https (rather than http) – this means the site is using  security when handling your money.

Explain that purchasing an item online consists of a few simple steps, just like in a real shop:

  • find the item
  • add it to your shopping basket
  • go to the checkout
  • give your delivery details
  • pay for the item

Activity - buy a kettle online

Explain to your student that they are going to visit a shopping site and go through the steps of buying an item online, but will not purchase anything

Explain each step as you go through the notes

When they reach the payments page of the site ask your student to look at the web address – it should start with https – see Tips (Security)
